Industrial Design Department curriculum foregrounds the profession of providing products and contexts for the society; not only out of welfare and necessity, but also for joy, taste, and criticality. The Department is aimed at graduates who have responsibility, and the capacity to lead their environment and society in matters of aesthetics and technology. The range of the profession is expanding; departing from artisanal and crafts based products, to mass-produced industrial utilities and systems; from objects that fill private spaces, to urban furniture that embellish public spaces; from simplest functional products to complex technological devices; and from low-batch digitally manufactured objects to interaction and service design works.
Advances in production technologies and growing demand for consumption of products has led to the need for creative planning that especially aims at mass production; industrial product designers have claimed and occupied this role for more than a century. Designers hold the unique position of being active decision-makers on formal, technical, and use of products. Their knowledge of material, method, techniques on the one hand; demands, needs, impacts on users on the other, are combined through design thinking and culture.
