Social Work is an academic discipline which generates solutions for both financial and spiritual needs of individuals and groups; develops ideas about how to generate and promote social solidarity; has direct contact with social groups; suggests proposals about increasing social wealth. Social Work is one of the much needed employment areas today, and those who occupy themselves with increasing quality of life of the society would prefer to study at this department. Social Work is one of few employment areas that offer not only financial but also spiritual satisfaction. This is an ideal area for those who are highly emphatic, feel pleasure of working with children and old people and the ones in need of protection.

Programme structure

Curriculum was formed with courses which can be utilized at every stage of students’ lives. The latest discussion topics and theoretical developments are taken into consideration while forming the curriculum. The main courses of the department are as follows: Introduction to Social work, sociology, psychology, social anthropology, human behavior and the social environment, social history, social work and social welfare, human rights, and social service, health legislation, social work theories, family law, local government and social service, social service interventions, and protection of women’s rights, and social services for the elderly, youth and social work and family therapy. Besides these courses, many elective courses which include specific topics are offered to students.

The need for qualified young staff increases every year in Turkey and all around the world. Considering increase in interest towards the field and national and international investments in such areas as health and education in our country especially in recent years, the academic education for this field is newly considered important and this means that many desirable jobs are available for our graduates. Graduates can be employed in the institutions under the ministries such as Family and Social Policies, Health, Education and Justice, and also in other public institutions, such as municipalities and universities. In the private sector, graduates can prefer to work in hospitals and educational institutions, nursing home, clinics, non-governmental organizations and foundations for women, children, the disabled and the elderly.
