In the Department of Journalism training program has been designed to educate qualified and equipped journalists that today’s media sector needs. The aim of the department is to train journalists who have the ability to analyze social, economic, cultural and political events within the frame of cause-effect relationships, are affiliated to professional ethics values, the defenders of the freedom of expression and the press, show respect for the right of the public to receive objective and accurate news. Theoretical and practical courses have been designed to have the students be aware of their capabilities and improve their creativity within the training; on the other hand, have solution-oriented thinking and begin to work as individuals who are sensitive to social problems. Students have a chance to practice what they learn in the courses in our University’s practical radio and television, news workshop and computer labs. By taking the importance of cooperation of sector and university into account, education program is carried out under the cooperation of local, national media organizations and professional organizations; and it intends to adapt the students to professional life during university years. Additionally, the students in our department can continue double major or minor programs and benefit from the Erasmus student exchange program.
Curriculum of the Department of journalism has consist of courses such as communication theory, communication law, communication ethics, news gathering and writing techniques, internet journalism, magazine journalism, radio and television journalism, journalism expert, sociology of news, web design, page design. In the curriculum, vocational courses and journalism practice have been focused on. In addition to compulsory courses, there are many optional courses that make students be expert in the area they want to improve themselves. Moreover, they are provided with a chance to take an elective course from different disciplines, which they are interested in, among the University and faculty courses to complete the courses related with journalism. Important and well-known journalists who work in the sector carry out some branch courses such as techniques of news writing, reporting economy, culture and art journalism. Also, the students are trained to work in management positions in media organizations through the courses like press management and media economics. Today, we can see the global media organizations taking place in the sector. In this context, knowing of foreign language enables students to get more employment opportunities. Taking the students’ requirements of speaking a foreign language into consideration, one of Spanish, Russian or German languages is taught as a second language in addition to English.
Graduates of the department of Journalism have the opportunity to work as journalist in both traditional and new media. They can work as a reporter and editor at printed and online newspapers, magazines, news agencies, and in various teams such as news department, editorial department, headship of editor, chief editorship, also in radio and television newsrooms. In addition, they can work as press consultant and directorate of press and public relations in the public and private sectors.
