Overview

Level of Manufacturing Industry of a country directly affects the wealth and welfare level in that country. Manufacturing Industry covers all the sectors from food to textiles, from automotive to aeronoutics, from cement to paper and petrochemicals, from medicine to machinery where the production-transformation processes from raw materials to products- is involved. This industry whose main input is the raw material and whose output is the product can lead to a high level of welfare and high employment if only it has high added value. This is only possible if products highly demanded in the world market can be manufactured by using less resources(raw material, energy, manpower) It may seem to have a temporaray succes in the world market buying the production equipment and the technology from abroad and imitating other products if a cost advantage exists; however such temporary success is bound to collapse due to the increasing competition based only on the cost criterion. If the manufacturing industry is intended to to flourish the economy, it must have the ability to continuously renew itself with the new technologies, renewing its production proceses, production equipment and methods to diversify the products towards high technology products with high added value. In order to achieve this the manufacturing industry should focus on products based on R&D, should be open to innovations and should have an ability to adapt these innovations and new technologies. It must be the universities where the manpower is educated and trained, where the knowledge is developed and transfered to technology. The level of education and research in the universities should be high and their activities should be directed towards the areas where the industry needs the most in order for feeding the industry with new knowledge and new technologies.

Programme structure

The Department of Manufacturing Engineering at Atilim University offers the Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc. MfgE) and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Manufacturing Engineering. The goal of the program is to provide a level of experience to permit students to step directly into either industry jobs or pursue graduate school. Class sizes are small to ensure students receive personal attention. The faculty hold Ph.D.s from some of the top engineering schools. They continue to pursue research and engineering projects, which provide numerous opportunities for students to participate in cutting-edge technology during the summer or part time during the school year.

Career opportunities

Manufacturing engineers are needed in every industry that produces any product. Industries that have hired our graduates include computers, electronics, automotive, aerospace, chemical and plastics. Most manufacturing engineering jobs are located in major cities where there are heavy concentrations of industries. There is a special need for manufacturing engineers in Turkey.
