The profession of interior design is dedicated to the evaluation of the spatial potential of already existent contexts. Present-day urban renewal projects and the problematic of the conversion of the existing stock of buildings have increased the allure of this profession. As a consequence, a rational evaluation of the existing stock and the revelation of their hidden potentials has become the primary endeavor of the profession of interior design. Department of Interior Design at BİLGİ emphasizes the importance of the basic elements of the quality of life such as the economies and richnesses of space, as opposed to a purely cosmetic intervention, aesthetic camouflage or ‘decoration’ as yet another component of the fashion industry. The focus of the education is first and foremost the development of the skills to evaluate the hidden potentials of already existent context. Students are also provided with the knowledge of materials, construction systems, lighting, acoustics and environmental control systems that will form the basis for their competent intervention in realizing this potential.
Field of Interior Design situated in between the fields of Architecture and Industrial Design defines itself within the large area of contemporary industrial and constructional sectors. It relates to architecture within the context of individual and original design, and associates with industrial design within the context of mass production based on contemporary production techniques. Department of Interior Design at BİLGİ in this in between location is the most important component of the ‘alternative education framework’ of the Faculty of Architecture at BİLGİ, which aims at bringing together these three departments. Interior Design’s first and foremost ideal as a profession is to create interior atmosphere through analysis of the existent context. This requires not only an aesthetic understanding but also technical skills to arrive at ‘integrated design.’ Integrated design requires designer to be in communication with various fields of engineering and to have information concerning construction materials and technologies, lighting, acoustics and environmental control systems. Students of the department of Interior Design at BİLGİ with this knowledge base are expected to work with diverse scales from object/furniture design, to spaces that house small scale communities, to public space that is expected to bring large scales of people.
