The Master of Science Degree Program with thesis in Civil Engineering aims to give depth and breadth to students in topics related to structural engineering, earthquake engineering, geotechnics, project and construction management, and hence equip them with knowledge and skills needed to carry out research and work in national and international projects which are not routine applications of everyday engineering problems.
The program is a 120 ECTS credit program with a duration of 2 academic years composed of 4 consecutive 30-ECTS semesters. The regular program consists of 7 courses of 21 local credits, a seminar and a thesis. Both the course work and the thesis have 60 ECTS credits each. Upon the request of the program director, the institute may require the prospective student to enroll to additional courses if his/her background is not considered to be sufficient to follow the program requirements. The department has well developed laboratories with a floor space of 950 m2 housing state of the art equipments for static and dynamic tests in the fields of structural and earthquake engineering, geotechnical engineering and materials science and hydraulics engineering.
There are a number of technical specialties within the realm of Civil Engineering, these include:
Structural engineering – creating the structural elements of design, whether for bridges, or skyscrapers. Probably the oldest single specialty in civil engineering, going all the way back to Pharaoh’s pyramids.
Geotechnical engineering – concerned with the rock and soil which supports the structures that other civil engineers design.
Environmental engineering – designing systems for the treatment of chemical, biological and thermal wastes.
Materials engineering – these are the experts on the various materials which other civil engineers use for their projects.
