As the perception of the translation profession has shown a significant improvement in today’s world of communication and networks, the recognition and prestige of translators and interpreters gain importance day by day. Nowadays, the education and training of translation and interpreting students have been adjusted to the professional life and its requirements in order to provide the students and graduates with the skills necessary to compete in the growing international translation business sector.
Within the framework of this background, Atılım University Department of Translation and Interpretation is keen on sustaining high quality in teaching principles and methods and on making use of the latest technological tools and devices to better equip the students with the facts of professional life. Our programme offers B.A. and M.A. degrees and is one of the leading programmes in academic and social activities within the body of higher education in Turkey. Our Atılım Translation and Interpretation Club (ATIC), its online journal and activities have attracted a wide audience among students of different branches.
The Translation and Interpretation Department of Atılım University has a four-year undergraduate programme. The objective of this programme is to equip students with theoretical and practical knowledge in translation and interpretation in such a way that they would be successful in their future endeavors and gain entry in the career they desire by shining through other Translation and Interpretation graduates. Students learn about and develop skills in translating and interpreting a wide range of texts of various fields such as international relations, law, medicine, economy and commerce, science and technology, literature, media, etc. by developing both their English and Turkish skills. The undergraduate programme is composed of both theoretical and practical courses. Interpreting courses (consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting) in the programme are offered in the simultaneous interpreting laboratory and students are equipped with many different interpreting techniques needed to work as a conference interpreter in their future career.
Academically trained translators/interpreters are increasingly sought after in both domestic and global labor markets. The graduates can easily be employed in the following areas: broadcasting, news agencies, publishing houses, foreign exchange departments of banks, Ministries of Foreign Affairs, European Union Affairs, Economy, Finance, Tourism and Culture, National Intelligence Organization, European Council, various international organizations, translation agencies, related departments of universities, as well as any company benefiting from translation and simultaneous interpretation practices. The graduates of the department may also follow their entrepreneurial interests to start their own translation businesses.
