Overview

The purpose of the Department of Architecture is to train and educate qualified and well-equipped architects who are conscious about professional ethics, and socially aware and environmentally sensitive within the modern educational atmosphere that it offers. In this regard the overall program is constituted of developing thinking and designing patterns based on innovative approach and criticism, and acquiring the students the skills of researching, reaching and converting information. The aim for the end of the four-year undergraduate education is to graduate architects who can approach the urban and architectural issues and challenges critically, discuss their contexts, have developed the skills and knowledge to understand and interpret architecture, and become aware of the professional ability of developing social and cultural values. In this regard, given that the profession combines science, technology, and art, it is essential that the design and application skills, which are planned to be acquired, are supported with institutional equipments.

Programme structure

In the Department of Architecture, architectural design studios constitute the spine/core of the education, and are supported by other must and elective courses from a variety of disciplines. At freshman year, the students are introduced to the world of design in the basic design studios. In the studios, which are a very important part of the education from year one till graduation, students work in an open environment that supports and enables easy interaction with both their peers and professors. The students’ final projects are exhibited in the same environment through peer observation, jury criticism and evaluation. This provides excellent opportunities for sharing ideas and knowledge. Courses on structural design, structural elements, and culture and art expand the students’ vision and increase their competence. Students also get a chance to put what they have learned into practice at architectural firms and construction sites during their obligatory internships, which constitute an important complementary aspect of the education.

Career opportunities

Graduates can work both in the construction and project units of public and private sectors as a designer, a construction project controller or a construction site manager. Many architects also choose to pursue their careers in their own firms or by free-lancing. Another alternative for architectural practice is domestic and/or international design competitions. The winning project, when realized, creates further work for the designer.
