The Department of Mathematics currently offers an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and also serves all other departments of Koç University by providing mathematics courses on demand. The research interests of the faculty members can be classifed as pure mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematical physics.
The purpose of the undergraduate program in Mathematics is to bring up competent and open minded individuals with analytical thinking abilities under the liberal arts educational philosophy of Koç University. The program prepares students for carrying out graduate studies in Mathematics or in fields such as Economics or Physical Sciences. The students can also start working in the related fields of business and industry right after graduation.
In order to receive the bachelor of science degree in Mathematics, a student needs to complete the area courses of the Mathematics department. The program emphasizes both the abstract and the applied branches of mathematics. The curriculum starts in the freshman year with the introductory abstract mathematics course and continues with calculus. In the second year, the students take multivariable calculus, differential equations and algebra, and in the third year they take analysis, applied mathematics and numerical methods. The required area courses are completed in the fourth year by taking complex analysis and topology. These area courses are designed to provide the students with a solid foundation in modern mathematics.
The area electives enable the students to carry out advanced study in different areas of mathematics. In addition, the elective courses might also be taken from other departments in preparation for graduate study in that field.
It is also possible to do a double major in Mathematics and another program such as economics, sciences, engineering or any other program. By completing the requirements of both of the programs, the student can be awarded with both degrees.
