Overview
It is our primary mission to equip our students with near-native English skills. As a department, we are aware that a good command of English is the key to a successful career in the fields of art, science, technology and politics among others. For this reason, during the first year of our program there is an emphasis on courses geared toward improving our students’ written and oral English language skills. In the ensuing years we introduce our students to literatures in English from a variety of periods and geographies. During their undergraduate years students are also expected to take courses in other fields such as philosophy, psychology and sociology. Thus, English majors not only learn to recognize the interrelationship among language, culture, and social systems, but also acquire the ability to read literary texts in the context of intellectual, socio-cultural and aesthetic concerns. Our undergraduate course plan allows students to follow double major or minor certificate programs in the areas of their interest. In fact the most important feature of our department is its flexible curriculum which enables all our students to enroll in courses that will enhance their intellectual scope.
Programme structure
Upon graduation, English majors qualify for jobs in highly popular professional fields which require a strong command of English and a multi-faceted liberal education. Many of our graduates are currently employed in educational institutions, publishing houses, embassies and consulates, media corporations, human resources departments, and advertising agencies. Some are pursuing academic careers either in our department’s graduate programs or in the graduate programs at other select universities.
